Always consult with the thatcher before implementing any of these designs they are deliberately vague as each roof must be treated as unique 

With a basic design for covering the rafters with a fire resistant covering, vertical battens in line with the rafters and horizontal battens to provide air movement under the thatch

The weight of new thatch is approximately 7 Lbs per sq foot -14 Kg per sq metre

U value of new thatch is approximately 0.034 W per 1 sq foot - 0.34 W per sq metre

These figures can only be a rough guide, as the weight, density and air trapped in the material 'tube' in vegetable matter  can vary as much as +/-  25% They are based on a 12" coat straight onto rafters, straw can be 18" thick and thatching over existing coats can be several feet in depth.
