The weight of new thatch is approximately 7 Lbs per sq foot -14 Kg per sq metre

*{Amended 10/06/11 with thanks to www.hastensconsulting.co.uk

7lbs per squ ft is probably a reasonable loading but the conversion figure of 14 kg per square meter is not correct and is significantly under weight.
The British Standard BS648:1964 'Weight of building materials' provides a reed thatch loading figure of 8.5lbs per sq ft (41.5kg/m2) for a 1ft thick thatch}*

U value of new thatch is approximately 0.034 W per 1 sq foot - 0.34 W per sq metre

These figures can only be a rough guide, as the weight, density and air trapped in the material 'tube' in vegetable matter  can vary as much as +/-  25% They are based on a 12" coat straight onto rafters, straw can be 18" thick and thatching over existing coats can be several feet in depth.
